Welcome To Worship

Welcome to our worship as we are gathered in heart and spirit if not in physical proximity with one another. It is a reminder that the church is not the building but rather it is the people of God who are the church.

The Greeting

God of wind and waves,
thank you that you meet us
when we are sure of our faith,
when we are battling our doubts,
wherever we are today.

Psalm of Praise: Psalm 105 verses 1-4

1 Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;
    make known among the nations what he has done.
2 Sing to him, sing praise to him;
    tell of all his wonderful acts.
3 Glory in his holy name;
    let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
4 Look to the Lord and his strength;
    seek his face always.

Take a moment of quiet reflection to consider the week you have had,
and the times you have let God down, and let yourselves down,
and maybe hurt others.

Lord Jesus, we are sorry for the times
we have not lived a life of love as you have asked us to;
for the times we have not loved you with our whole heart,
or our neighbours as ourselves.
Forgive us, Lord, and help us start again.
Lord Jesus, we are sorry for the times
we do not put our trust in you.
We are sorry that sometimes we focus
on the problems in the deep water in front of us,
instead of trusting you to keep us afloat.
Forgive us, Lord, and help us trust in you.

May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins,
and keep us in eternal life.

Gracious Father,
revive your Church in our day,
and make her holy, strong and faithful,
for your glory’s sake
in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Gospel Reading - Matthew 14:22-33

22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 28“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29“Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” 32And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

A Prayer of Declaration

We believe in God the Father,
from whom every family
in heaven and on earth is named.
We believe in God the Son,
who lives in our hearts through faith,
and fills us with his love.
We believe in God the Holy Spirit,
who strengthens us
with power from on high.
We believe in one God;
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Amen

Let us pray:

Loving God, we come to you now,
trusting in your goodness
and knowing that you are always there for each and every one of us.

In the storms of life, help us to trust in you

We pray for the world in this global pandemic, with many countries suffering the effects of coronavirus. The illness has caused so many deaths in the world and also economic hardship. Be with all nations and all governments as they try to grapple with the response to this pandemic.

In the storms of life, help us to trust in you

We pray for our own nation this summer, with lives still restricted we pray for families that struggle to see one another, for workers uncertain on their future job security. We pray that you may place in our hearts the calling you have for us at this time and how we can step out in Faith to serve you in this world.

In the storms of life, help us to trust in you

We pray for those we know who are ill, people we know who need our prayers at this time. Lord, reach out to those people who feel like they are being overwhelmed like you reached out to Peter as we was overwhelmed by the water. We remember too those who have died and how much they meant to us and how much we miss them. We trust they are at peace in your presence now and we pray for those who mourn their loss.  In particular we remember Linda and her family today.

In the storms of life, help us to trust in you

Loving God we bring to you our prayers today and ask that for the faith to look to you in all the storms of life knowing that you alone can bring us safely through.
In the name of Jesus.

The Lord's Prayer

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray,

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever.

The Peace

We are the body of Christ.
In the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body.
Let us then pursue all that makes for peace and builds up our common life.
The peace of the Lord be always with you Amen.

Consider all that God has done for you, especially as you see this in Jesus. ‘Count your blessings’ and respond with appropriate generosity from your material wealth.

Reflecting on Holy Communion

Holy communion is available on Sunday night at 6pm in St John's Church, Hook.

At this time when we cannot easily gather to share Holy Communion with one another we take some time to reflect on what it means to each of us that Jesus gave his own life that we might live life in freedom.

1 Corinthians 11: 23 - 26

23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’26For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

O God, whose beauty is beyond our imagining
and whose power we cannot comprehend:
show us your glory as far as we can grasp it,
and shield us from knowing more than we can bear
until we may look upon you without fear;
through Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Lord Jesus, as we go out from here,
help us to step out in faith,
remembering who we walk with,
knowing that you have authority over all.

And the blessing of God Almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always.

Go in peace to Love and serve the Lord
In the name of Christ. Amen.
