Sunday 12th July
Whitewater BeneficeIntroductionWelcome to our online worship for Sunday 12th July - Trinity 5 - The theme is Freedom.
You may like to light a candle as a reminder that the love of God is like a light in our darkness. Music: Come, now is the time to worship is played by Nikki Welcome To WorshipWelcome to our worship as we are gathered in heart and spirit if not in physical proximity with one another. It is a reminder that the church is not the building but rather it is the people of God who are the church. Opening PrayerThe theme of today’s service is Freedom. It is based on the freedom that we are offered in Jesus, freedom from guilt and shame. Freedom from condemnation. Freedom from the fear that we are not good enough. Freedom to be unselfish and live to follow Jesus, using his life and energy to love others. Let us begin with a famous prayer from St Augustine: Eternal God, [after Augustine of Hippo (430 AD)] HymnBe thou my vision Collect for todayAlmighty God, send down upon your Church the riches of your Spirit, Story 1 - a true story from ‘Bible in One Year’ by Nicky Gumbelhttps://www.bibleinoneyear.org/bioy/commentary/949 At the age of eighteen, Billy Nolan ran away from the merchant navy. He was an alcoholic for thirty-five years. For twenty years he sat outside Holy Trinity Brompton drinking alcohol and begging for money. On 13 May 1990, he looked in the mirror and said, ‘You’re not the Billy Nolan I once knew.’ To use his own expression, he asked the Lord Jesus Christ into his life and made a covenant with him that he would never drink alcohol again. He has not touched a drop since. His life is transformed. He radiates the love and joy of Christ. I once said to him, ‘Billy, you look happy.’ He replied, ‘I am happy because I am free. Life is like a maze and at last I have found a way out through Jesus Christ.’ St Augustine wrote that God was the master ‘whom to serve is perfect freedom.’ This is a great paradox. Many people think that if they serve God they will lose their freedom. In fact, it is the very opposite. Living for ourselves is, in fact, a form of slavery. Serving God ‘in the new way of the Spirit’ (Romans 7:6) is the way to find perfect freedom. ConfessionDear Lord, We are sorry that when we know what we should do, We are sorry when we think that living for you is just too demanding, We are sorry that so often we are distracted by all the good things that we have, We thank you that you go on loving us despite our failures and faults. AbsolutionMay Almighty God have mercy on us, Story 2 – a local Story of Bobby Buddies in LockdownSome of you may remember the time when Ann Taylor in Hook spoke in ‘This Time Tomorrow’ and introduced us to Bobby Buddies. These are teddies to knit and give to the Emergency Services to help vulnerable children in times of great trauma and crisis.
Our church family knitters are getting behind this project. See our Bobby Buddies Page for details including a knitting pattern. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.’ 18‘Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.’ Talk - Freedom in ChristMarion's talk today also includes the following reading New Testament reading: Romans 8.1-2, 5-61Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 5Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. Reflecting on Holy CommunionHoly communion is available on Sunday night at 6pm in St John's Church, Hook. At this time when we cannot gather to share Holy Communion with one another we take some time to reflect on what it means to each of us that Jesus gave his own life that we might live life in freedom.
1 Corinthians 11: 23 - 2623For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’26For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. Eternal God, giver of love and power, Consider all that God has done for you, especially as you see this in Jesus. ‘Count your blessings’ and respond with appropriate generosity from your material wealth.
BlessingGod the Father, Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. HymnYou Shall go out with Joy Recorded by Jonathan Veira. Written by Steffi Geiser Rubin and Stuart Dauerman. You shall go out with joy
